One needs only to look at his boxing background and impressive resume to determine his worth, and the privilege realized by those trained by him. But why not? His father was a boxer, his uncle was a boxer who sparred with the great Joe Louis, his brother, Olympic Super Heavyweight Gold Medalist Tyrell Biggs, at his influence became a boxer and of course, Xavier found himself there, in the boxing gym, where he became yet another addition to a family legacy of boxing talent. A product of Philadelphia’s boxing elite, Xavier Biggs turned to professional boxing after a short-lived undefeated amateur career at the suggestion of his legendary trainer Jimmy Arthur. During his professional career he had the privilege of training under several legendary Philadelphia trainers including Quenzell McCall, Georgie Benton, and Slim Perkins. Under such tutorage Xavier was able to serve as chief sparring partner for Philadelphia legend Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts while Watts trained for a comeback fight. He sparred with champions Robert Hines, Buster Drayton, and Mike Rossman, all the while increasing his own skill and technique, making a name for himself among Philadelphia’s skilled “sharp- shooters”. As his talent became obvious, Xavier suffered an extremely frustrating career having more than 35 opponents pull out from scheduled fights. At one point he was offered a promotional contract, but turned it down after feeling that his loyalties and obligations would be jeopardized were he to accept. So it was that after seven and a half frustrating years and little activity, Xavier decided to retire his own career to assist his younger brother Tyrell, as “Ty” made the transition from amateur to professional boxing after becoming the first Olympic Super Heavyweight Gold Medal Champion. continue |
